Preston Road, Hull
Hodson Architects worked with Southdale Homes and the Chevin Housing Group to develop a housing scheme on the Ellerby Grove site, near Preston Road, in East Hull.
We committed to involving the local community whilst developing the brief, engaging ARC (Architecture Centre, Hull) in conjunction with the Preston Road New Deal in the Community programme to organise a number of focus groups and public 'drop-in' sessions.
Dwellings are carefully orientated to optimise the path of the sun creating light filled homes. Traditonal materials have been used in a contemporary manner, using a contrasting mix of brick, render and timber used throughout to give a cohesive identity. The central crescent formed around a protected community garden has glazing and living spaces to the south which as a further benefit gives a degree of natural policing.
A mixed community in terms of housing tenure and type has been created by the inclusion of bungalows, housing and flats, all of which adhere to the 'lifetime homes' criteria.
Completed Spring 2008
Contract Value £9.5 million
