Cycle Works, Barton-upon-Humber
The former bicycle-manufacturing factory is now redundant and whilst it is structurally sound there are many key elements of fabric which need refurbishment or replacement
The brief is to convert the warehouse into affordable residential units to suit. The existing large open framework is formed using double timber trusses sitting onto the external masonry walls and intermediate steel column supports.
The proposal is to form an first floor with mezzanines at the second floor level. The existing timber trusses are to be adopted to allow the roof space to be opened up. A large central atrium lies between each block of accommodation running approximately north to south.
The atrium is integral to the scheme’s day lighting solution. Sunlight is brought into the central core and then distributed into the adjoining flats via a mix of glazed screens and clerestory glazing. A communal social space is provided in the atria through the use of designated seating and planting areas.
