Franklin College

New build teaching block

Hodson Architects were commissioned to undertake a campus masterplan and a new teaching block will form part of the second phase of works at Franklin College.

The new teaching block is positioned to enclose external courtyard spaces (a feature of the existing college) and form a strong edge to the existing car park.
The new building will be entered off the newly opened up corridor to the west of the Learning Centre and contains 10 teaching spaces, informal tutorial spaces, a staff base, reprographics and storage facilities.

The roof will be planted with sedum blanket and the excess rainwater will be used to water the planting beds. The teaching spaces will be naturally ventilated by bringing cool air in through windows at low level and fitting 'monodraught windcatchers' in the service zone over the corridor to expel warm air plus bring in fresh air, when required.

Completion     September 2012
Value             £1.2million
