Fishermen's Memorial, Grimsby
The town of Grimsby has long been closely associated with the fishing industry. The Fishermen's Memorial serves as a tribute to the all those who risked their lives each time they went out to sea. A sculpture was commissioned from local artist, Trevor Harries; Hodson Architects were appointed to design the plinth and surrounding landscape.
The sculpture is 3m high, bronze cast. St James Square provides an appropriate and well-used public setting with the listed St James Church a suitably scenic backdrop for the memorial.
A visual metaphor for the ocean is created by the sculptural wave-like forms, which give the design of the plinth and integral link with the statue and encompass the message conveyed by the memorial as a whole.
Completed: January 2005
